Among the progress reported:
• BAM Construct UK has for the first time measured its carbon footprint, providing a baseline for future CO2 reductions across its different business activities • All BAM Properties’ developments achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent’ rating in 2007 • BAM FM managed sites have achieved a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2005
• 100% of BAM’s business activities are now certified to ISO 14001 • Staff turnover is 7% - less than half the average in the construction sector nationwide • BAM has reduced accidents by 10% year on year since the year 2000 • BAM Construction was the first to introduce a minimum safety training requirement for subcontractor supervisors. It is now standard practice for major contractors.
In the past 12 months the company has appointed a community engagement manager and a climate change manager. A company-wide CSR committee, led at board level, has been established to co-ordinate and champion CSR issues throughout all BAM Construct UK’s businesses.
Caroline Cook, BAM Construct UK’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, says ‘This report shows that each of BAM’s business units has made progress. It represents a baseline for measuring and reporting improvements in the years to come. In 2009 one of BAM’s goals will be to reduce energy usage, CO2 emissions and the amount of waste the company sends to landfill. This is why it recently signed up to the WRAP commitment to reduce waste to landfill by half by 2012.’
BAM Construct UK has businesses for construction, facilities management, design, plant hire and property development. Its turnover in 2007 was just over £1 billion.
