Diversity and Inclusion

Our commitment to diversity, inclusion, fairness and respect runs through our whole employee experience at BAM.

Put simply, we want BAM to be a great place to work and for our people to get the support they need to be themselves and their best.

We are leading the way in bringing flexible working to life so more people can fulfil their career ambitions. And we are making the built environment a more attractive career choice -  40% of our new joiners are now female.

We want everyone to have a sense of ‘belonging’ here at BAM and maximise their talents, share experiences, and have their voice heard.

Our goals

Our goal is that by 2025 we will have a workforce that:

  • Has gender parity,
  • Is culturally diverse (meaning that at least 15% of our employees will be from ethnic minority backgrounds)
  • Supports a culture that attracts at least 5% of employees who identify as LGBTQ+ and
  • Supports an environment where employees who live with disabilities can thrive at levels representative of at least 5% of the working population.

Diversity at BAMBAM Apprentice

Take a look below to see some of the things we've done to build equality and be a diverse and inclusive organisation...

Launched as part of National Inclusion Week 2019, our employee resource groups involve colleagues, supported by members of our Senior Management Team, creating forums for those with a common interest to come together and discuss, support and plan around:

  • Disability and Carers
  • Gender
  • ME@BAM: Minority ethnic
  • Proud@BAM: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning/queer and other sexual orientations (LGBTQ+)
These groups increase awareness of the challenges and differences that people from different backgrounds face in the workplace, and find ways to adapt the business to everyone’s benefit. By coming together to discuss a common topic, the groups can also give constructive feedback on policies, ways of working and business challenges.

To help identify and learn best practice, we are also members of WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) and the Stonewall Diversity Champions Programme.

Enhancing lives

Our enhancing lives programme encompasses a wide range of activities and support. We offer apprenticeships and work experience, support our own people to live healthier lives or to improve their education or training, and assist organisations, which positively impact our society including charities and social enterprises.

Flexible working

In 2019 we took part in an 18-month groundbreaking study with Build UK and workplace experts Timewise, to look at flexible working for the construction industry. We joined the Timewise Construction Pioneers programme along with three other of the UK’s largest construction companies, BAM Nuttall, Skanska UK and Willmott Dixon – all looking at re-designing shift patterns in onsite roles, to enable more flexible working, enhanced wellbeing and a better work-life balance – for all of our colleagues.

We are proud to be a part of the UK’s first industry wide flexible working approach, and earlier in 2021 we launched a new flexible working approach for all BAM Construct UK colleagues.
