Caroline Cook, BAM Construct UK’s Head of CSR, says, ‘Reporting is an important part of CSR. A company’s ability to measure meaningfully and report accurately is about how honest it is with itself. Target setting has to be ambitious but proportionate. We’ve spent a lot of time looking into how we measure and assess what BAM Construct UK’s businesses are doing –our emissions, our community engagement activities – and providing a proper framework to measure, track and report our progress. Without this info we can’t demonstrate the difference our activities make. ‘BAM has set challenging targets and we continue to ramp up our commitment. For example, in 2008 we’ve missed our target for diverting 70% of waste from landfill but we’ve still set a target of 75% for this year and our 65% diversion achieved places us among the industry's leaders. ‘Last year we appointed a Climate Change Manager. Reducing CO2 is a major challenge for this sector. Our carbon emissions rose in 2008, but measured against every pound of turnover, our emissions reduced by 7%. We are continually raising the bar and have signed the 10:10 carbon reduction commitment.’ Ms Cook concluded, ‘BAM has never been more extensively engaged with schools and communities than it is now and that is what motivates a people-based business like ours.’ BAM’s full CSR report is available on the home page.
